One of the first actions taken by CDFA Secretary William (Bill) J. Lyons, Jr. to
mobilize forces against GWSS/PD was to assemble the numerous stakeholders
into a task force charged with developing recommendations on research needs
and long-term strategies. The membership in this task force was broad-based,
reflecting the broad-ranging nature of the pest problem. Arranging for the
various affected groups to work together resulted in better coordination of
stakeholder activities and enabled them to quickly provide Secretary Lyons
with far-ranging recommendations. Building upon the work of the first group,
Secretary Lyons appointed a second task force to advise him on GWSS/PD research
and program issues. This task force will serve
an ongoing advisory role. The University of California also appointed a
task force, one charged with helping focus UC resources towards helping growers.
Secretary Lyons greatly appreciates the contributions of all task force
members and stakeholders whose efforts are enabling California to move
quickly and effectively against this serious pest threat.
